Grant County: Nebraska
Welcome to Grant County!

Grant County is located in what is known as the Lake Country of the Nebraska Sandhills and consists of around 51,000 acres. Grant county was created by an Act of the Nebraska Legislature in March, 1887. It was named for Ulysses S. Grant, Civil War General and eighteenth President of the United States.

Grant County, Nebraska is located in the heart of the beautiful Sandhills on the edge of the Nebraska Panhandle. The county has three towns on highway 2, Whitman, Ashby, Hyannis. Bingham is included, as so many patronize Grant County because of the central high school. Hyannis is the county seat. The county has population of 767 people.

The county is bisected east to west by Highway 2 and north and south by highway 61. The Burlington Northern Railroad parallels Highway 2 , transporting freight and coal.

The county sits on top of the largest underground water supply in the world, the Ogallala Aquifer. With the exception of the town’s businesses, the main industry is cattle ranching. The area is home to some of the finest cattle herds in the nation. Most ranches are family owned and operated and have been for several generations.

The South Dakota Badlands, Black Hills, and Mount Rushmore are just a short drive to the north and west. Lake McConnaughy is just an hour south and an hour east is the Nebraska National Forest at Halsey. There are various historical sights in the area to visit.

The vast, wide-open spaces and picturesque rolling hills make a drive through
our county worthwhile!
