The Dismal River Sporting Ranch is located just 14 miles
south of Mullen. The Sporting Ranch is the creation of John Howell. The Dismal River, winding through the Sandhills, is a perfect habitat for wildlife of all kinds. Native to the area, and available for hunting (in season), are whitetail & mule deer, turkey, grouse, dove, and coyote. In addition, the ranch has raised (and provided for hunting) elk, buffalo, and wild longhorn. All hunts are guided hunts with Shawn "Pee Wee" Omara as the guide. First rate taxidermy and processing are available. The ranch can process and ship the meat, hide, and antlers to the hunter. The ranch also offers first rate fishing for Brown and Rainbow Trout from the Dismal River. Available in Spring 2004, the ranch will also offer stocked fishing ponds. A current Nebraska state hunting and/or fishing license is required for all hunting and fishing, with the exception of elk, buffalo, and longhorn hunts. In addition to hunting, the ranch also offers a variety of other activities including:
After a full day of activity, the visitors can relax and
unwind in deluxe accommodations. A lodge is available with all the comforts of
home:

was contributed by Mr. Dick Youngscap.
In addition to the fine nine-hole golf course in Mullen -- locally referred to as "Mullen North" -- there is "Mullen South", located about 15 miles southwest of Mullen, also known as Sand Hills Golf Club. The eighteen-hole
private golf course opened in June 1995; its season is from June 1st through September 30th. The golf course was designed by Bill Coore and Ben
Crenshaw. Less than 3,000 cyds. of material was moved during construction. It features wide fescue fairways and bent grass greens, most of which have natural, flowing contours. The Sand Hills Golf Club can best be described as a
private golf retreat, not a resort. Its designers have described it as "the opportunity of a golf purist's lifetime ... a course that is exciting and challenging; able to withstand the test of modern equipment, yet with the unmistakable link to the past." Since this is a private
golf course, anyone interested in further information needs to contact the main
office at Sand Hills (PO Box 8, Mullen, NE 69152 or 308-546-2237)
